Minding Terrain

Walkshop led by Shawn Hall

The Minding Terrain Walkshop #21 led by Shawn Hall began and ends in the Bywater at Mickey Markey Park, participants visited unremarkable areas that have spawned the deep environmental and citizen science based projects that Shawn has been engaged in for the past 10 years. During the walkshop, she shared specifics of how curiosity, observation and walking have led to her science inquires about Monarch butterflies and native bees, and to discoveries like a birds populating out of their normal zone and various amounts and types of litter that have become foundational and ongoing projects for her. Participants were encouraged to slow down and observe with the aim of being fully present to experience what at first sight may seem most mundane but can lead to meaningful meanderings of the mind and body.

Shawn Hall is an abstract painter who has developed an expanded practice that includes video, installation, performance, environmental research and outreach. She views her practice as act of participation in the biological world through the interplay of intuition and action. Shawn grew up in Michigan where she earned an AS in Science from Delta College in 1983 before moving to Chicago (short stint at U of C and a BFA from School of the Art Institute) Los Angeles (where she worked for artist JoAnn Callis), Baltimore (MFA from the Maryland Institute), San Diego (teaching UCSD extension) and then landing in New Orleans in 1997. She has shown extensively around the US. A video work of Shawn’s, Dislocated Plumule Ecology, shot entirely on her walks in the Bywater, is currently on view at Southern Louisiana University Contemporary Art Gallery in Hammond, LA, in a show called Liminal Landscapes curated by Cristina Molina.
